Japan’s Evolution Island

Japan’s newest Island, Nishinoshima, will now aid scientists in studying evolution. The island is part of the Ogasawara island chain, also known as the Bonin Islands. It lies 620 miles south of Tokyo and has an area of about one square mile, according to the Japanese coast guard. (more…)
Cormorant Fishing

May 11th marks the beginning of cormorant fishing season which runs through mid-October. Also known as Ukai, this way of catching Japanese trout is done utilizing the help of cormorant sea birds. In this ancient tradition skillful trainers dressed in costume wield 10-12 wild cormorants to catch small trout out of the Nagaragawa River, located in Gifu Prefecture.
